A long-held tradition at The Manse on Marsh is our annual Octoberfest celebration, where we treat our San Luis Obispo senior living residents, their families, community members, and our staff to many of the same festivities and culinary creations as the 6 million people who attend Oktoberfest each year in Germany.
The Manse on Marsh Octoberfest celebration began with a lunch for around 50 guests that included BBQ steak, traditional German potato salad, and a host of other side dish selections – all prepared by The Manse on Marsh Executive Chef and culinary team. Most everyone sat outside, enjoying the weather and listening to live music from local band The Mudslingers. Several of the residents even dressed in traditional Bavarian attire for the occasion!
Later in the day, happy hour began with more live music from The Mello Fellos. Residents danced the polka before a dinner celebration of Jagerschnitzel, sauerkraut, and stout layer cake.
History of Oktoberfest
The first Oktoberfest in Munich took place on October 12, 1812 to celebrate the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig (who later became King Ludwig I) and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. Munich's citizens were invited to join the fest, which was held on a field on the city's outskirts. The field was named “Theresienwiese,” which means “Theresia’s Meadow,” in honor of the new princess.
The festivities ended with a horse race, and it was decided to repeat the race in the following years. An agricultural show, beers stalls, merry-go-rounds and other amusements were also added to the festival over time.
The horse race is no longer held, but Oktoberfest is still celebrated annually on the Theresienwiese in Munich. Locals often refer to Oktoberfest as the “Wiesn.”
